Control Logic Is Moving Toward Structured Text

For decades, ladder logic was the default choice for PLC programming — easy to read on a factory floor, easy to troubleshoot with a multimeter in hand. That hasn't disappeared, but more of the complex logic on modern lines — recipe management, math-heavy calculations, state machines — is increasingly written in Structured Text (ST). It reads more like traditional programming, and it scales better as machine logic gets more complex.

PLCs and Industrial PCs Are Converging

The line between a PLC and an industrial PC keeps blurring. Soft PLCs running on industrial PCs are showing up more often in projects that need both deterministic control and heavier computation — vision processing, data historian functions, or advanced HMI — on the same hardware footprint. We're seeing more hybrid architectures where a traditional PLC still owns safety-critical control, while an IPC alongside it handles data and visualization.

OPC UA Is Becoming the Default, Not the Exception

Multi-vendor plants used to mean a patchwork of proprietary drivers and gateways to get PLCs, SCADA, and MES talking to each other. OPC UA has matured into the practical standard for that interoperability, and more PLC platforms now ship with native OPC UA servers rather than requiring a third-party add-on. If you're specifying a new control system, native OPC UA support is worth checking for up front.

Cybersecurity Is No Longer a Separate Conversation

PLC programming used to be scoped independently from network security. That's changing — segmentation, access control, and secure remote access are increasingly part of the initial control system design rather than something bolted on afterward. Expect more RFPs and audits to ask for this explicitly.

Remote Commissioning and Diagnostics Keep Maturing

Remote access to PLC programs for commissioning support and troubleshooting became common out of necessity in recent years, and the tooling around it has matured — better VPN-based remote access, more robust remote debugging, and clearer audit trails of who accessed what. For clients running multi-site operations, this materially cuts commissioning travel time and support response time.

None of these trends require ripping out working systems. The practical takeaway is: when specifying a new PLC platform or control panel, ask about OPC UA support, plan for secure remote access from the start, and think about where Structured Text might simplify logic that's outgrown ladder.
