Choosing Between a PLC and an Industrial PC for Your Next Project

They Solve Different Problems
PLCs and industrial PCs both show up on a modern control panel, but they're not competing for the same job. A PLC is purpose-built for deterministic, real-time control — the same scan cycle, the same reliability, running for years with minimal maintenance. An industrial PC is a general-purpose computer hardened for a plant floor environment, built to run more computationally demanding software with more flexibility.
When a PLC Is the Right Call
For most direct machine and process control, a PLC is still the better fit:
- Safety-critical control logic, where deterministic timing and a proven track record matter more than raw processing power
- Harsh environments — heat, vibration, dust — where a PLC's ruggedized design and lack of moving parts (no fans, no spinning drives) pays off
- Long-term stability with minimal IT overhead — no OS patch cycles, no antivirus, no general-purpose software to maintain
When an Industrial PC Makes More Sense
An IPC earns its place when the application needs more than control logic:
- Machine vision processing, which needs real computing power a PLC isn't built to provide
- MES, historian, or reporting functions that involve databases, complex UI, or IT-system integration
- Advanced HMI applications with heavy graphics or multi-screen requirements
- Edge analytics or IIoT gateways aggregating data across multiple systems
The Real Answer Is Usually Both
In most of the projects we build, this isn't an either/or decision. A PLC owns the core control logic — the part that has to run reliably and deterministically no matter what else is happening — while an IPC alongside it handles vision, data, and advanced visualization. That division of labor plays to each platform's strengths instead of forcing one to do a job it wasn't designed for.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Decide
A few questions tend to clarify which way a specific project should go:
- Does this application need deterministic, real-time control, or is it primarily about data and visualization?
- How harsh is the installation environment, and how much unplanned maintenance can the plant tolerate?
- Does the application need to integrate with IT systems, databases, or vision processing?
- Who's supporting this system long-term — a controls team or an IT team?
